Human-in-the-loop describes a setup where people and automated systems work together so that humans supervise, guide, or correct the machine’s outputs. This approach is used in areas like machine learning, quality control, medical review, and any situation where wrong answers could cause harm. Tasks a human might do include labeling training data, approving recommendations, or intervening when an algorithm flags something as ambiguous. The aim is to combine the speed and scale of automation with human judgement and common sense. Human-in-the-loop matters because it helps catch errors that automated systems can make, improving safety, fairness, and reliability. It also allows systems to improve over time as they learn from human corrections and preferences. Having people involved supports accountability and transparency, since a human can explain or take responsibility for a decision. On the downside, it can add cost, slow processes, and require training to avoid introducing human bias. When designed thoughtfully, it strikes a balance: automation handles routine work while humans handle nuance, oversight, and final decisions.
